Juice Plus+ Side Effects: What’s Been Reported and Who Should Be Careful

    juice plus side effects

Short answer: most people take Juice Plus+ without problems, but side effects have been reported: stomach upset and a hive-like rash in clinical studies, and one case of elevated liver tests that returned to normal after stopping (Memorial Sloan Kettering). People on chemotherapy or radiation are advised not to take it, and anyone who is pregnant, takes medication or has a health condition should check with a doctor first. Some newer products have their own cautions — the Metabolism blend's fiber, Luminate's caffeine and probiotics for people who are seriously ill.

What side effects have been reported with Juice Plus+?

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's review of the research notes that "some patients reported gastrointestinal distress and hive-like rash in clinical studies," and describes a case report of a patient whose liver function tests were elevated and normalized after stopping the product (MSK). If you notice a rash, itching, swelling, ongoing stomach problems or yellowing of the skin or eyes, stop taking it and contact your doctor.

Some people also notice digestive changes when they start any new supplement or add more plant foods. That usually settles, but persistent symptoms are worth mentioning to your doctor.

Who should check with a doctor before taking Juice Plus+?

    • People having chemotherapy or radiation. MSK advises against it, because supplements with antioxidant properties may make these treatments less effective, and Juice Plus+ may interfere with some chemotherapy drugs.
    • Anyone taking prescription medication, including blood thinners — ask your pharmacist about interactions.
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
    • People with food allergies. The blends contain powders from many foods — the Berry Blend label, for example, lists cocoa and ginger alongside the berries (NIH label database). Check the current label for your allergens.
    • Anyone scheduled for blood tests: MSK notes Juice Plus+ may raise blood levels of some vitamins, so tell your doctor you take it.

Is Juice Plus+ "all natural" with no synthetic ingredients?

Not exactly. The capsules contain fruit, vegetable and berry juice powders plus added vitamins — the labels in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database list forms such as calcium ascorbate (vitamin C) and d-alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) (Vegetable Blend+ label). That's normal for supplements, but it means "whole food" doesn't mean nothing else is added — and it's one reason to count vitamins across all the supplements you take.

    Product-specific cautions

    • Metabolism Natural Support Blend — for adults only. Its fiber swells, so always take it with enough water (it could cause choking otherwise; avoid it if you have trouble swallowing). Mild, temporary bloating or gas can happen, and it may affect how some medications are absorbed — check with your doctor if you take medication. It is not a GLP-1 medication.
    • Luminate — contains naturally sourced caffeine from coffee berry, according to Juice Plus+. Count it toward your caffeine for the day, especially if you're sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or have heart problems.
    • Probiotic Capsules — probiotics have been linked to rare but serious infections, mostly in people who were severely ill or immunocompromised (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). If that's you, only take them on medical advice. More in probiotics with antibiotics.
    • Chewables and gummies for kids — keep supplements out of children's reach, use the serving on the label, and ask your pediatrician if your child has allergies or a health condition. See Juice Plus+ for kids.

Is Juice Plus+ safe for athletes?

Two products — the Fruit & Vegetable Blend Capsules For Sport and the Berry Blend Capsules For Sport — are NSF Certified for Sport, which means they're screened for substances banned in sport. Other Juice Plus+ products aren't marketed with that certification, so competitive athletes should stick to the For Sport versions and confirm the listing at nsfsport.com. See Juice Plus+ for athletes.

Can you take too much Juice Plus+?

Stick to the serving on the label — more isn't better. Because the products contain added vitamins, taking several Juice Plus+ products and a multivitamin can add up; check the labels against upper limits (for example, vitamin D's adult limit is 4,000 IU — see vitamin D3 1000 vs 2000 vs 5000 IU).
